Muzej krapinskih neandertalaca s Nalazištem Hušnjakovo osvojio je prestižnu nagradu Europske mreže kulturnog turizma (ECTN Awards 2021.) u kategoriji Arheološka nalazišta i muzeji kao atrakcije kulturnog turizma. Muzej je nagradu osvojio zahvaljujući izvrsnoj suvremenoj prezentaciji prapovijesne, arheološke i antropološke teme, a posebno zbog zasluženog statusa nezaobilazne kulturno-turističke destinacije Europe koju godišnje posjeti 100 tisuća posjetitelja iz cijeloga svijeta, ističe se u priopćenju. U obrazloženju nagrade posebno su istaknute kreativne metode rada s djecom i mladima, suradnja s lokalnom zajednicom u kojoj se muzej profilirao kao glavni generator kulturnih događanja, što ga čini primjerom dobre prakse održivog kulturnog turizma na svom području.
Finalisti u istoj kategoriji bili su i plovidbeni interpretacijski centar pomorske baštine otoka Lošinja Loger Nerezinac te Gradski muzej Zenica iz Bosne i Hercegovine. Zenički muzej se našao među tri najbolje atrakcije u izboru četrdesetak kandidata u šest kategorija i jedini je finalist u svim kategorijama iz BiH, a sa balkanskih prostora društvo među najboljim mu prave još tri institucije i projekta iz hrvatske i jedna iz Slovenije.
ECTN nagrada za 2021. je dodijeljena u šest kategorija. ECTN je paneuropska mreža posvećena razvoju i promociji održivog kulturnog turizma, a ovogodišnja svečana dodjela nagrada održana je u Atini (Grčka) tokom 14. ECTN-ove Konferencije kulturnog turizma s glavnom temom obnove europskog turizma kroz kulturu, baštinu i kreativnost.
